Cholic acid

Cholic acid

Cholic acid is a naturally occurring bile acid that is used to treat patients with genetic deficiencies in the synthesis of bile acids

Cholic acid is a bile acid used to treat patients with bile acid synthesis disorders caused by single enzyme defects. This medicine is also used to help treat patients with peroxisomal disorders (including Zellweger spectrum disorders) who have symptoms of liver disease, steatorrhea, or have difficulty in absorbing fat soluble vitamins

Cholic acid, formulated as Cholbam capsules, is approved by the United States Food and Drug Administration as a treatment for children and adults with bile acid synthesis disorders due to single enzyme defects, and for peroxisomal disorders (such as Zellweger syndrome)

Cholic acid considered as a very important starting material for the manufacturing of Chenodeoxycholic cholic acid ,Ursodeoxycholic acid and Obeticholic acid which are the active ingredients used by the pharmaceutical industry for the treatment of liver diseases, such as gallstones and cirrhosis of the liver and also for the manufacture of products which help digestion

Chenodeoxycholic acid

Chenodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid naturally found in the body. It works by dissolving the cholesterol that makes gallstones and inhibiting production of cholesterol in the liver and absorption in the intestines, which helps to decrease the formation of gallstones. It can also reduce the amount of other bile acids that can be harmful to liver cells when levels are elevated

Chenodeoxycholic acid is indicated for the treatment of inborn errors of primary bile acid synthesis due to sterol 27 hydroxylase deficiency (presenting as cerebrotendinous xanthomatosis (CTX)) in infants, children and adolescents aged 1 month to 18 years and adults.

Chenodeoxycholic acid is used to dissolve gallstones in people who cannot have gallbladder surgery

Structure of Chenodeoxycholic acid

Structure of Ursodeoxycholic acid

Ursodeoxycholic acid

Ursodeoxycholic acid is a bile acid which is produced naturally by the body. It works by reducing the amount of cholesterol released by your liver and by slowly dispersing the cholesterol. This breaks up the stones. Some Ursodeoxycholic acid preparations can also help to treat primary biliary cholangitis

Ursodeoxycholic acid (UCDA) is increasingly used for the treatment of cholestatic liver diseases.

Ursodeoxycholic acid is also indicated for the treatment of patients with primary biliary cirrhosis (PBC)

Obeticholic acid

Obeticholic acid is a semi-synthetic bile acid analogue which has the chemical structure 6α-ethyl-chenodeoxycholic acid. It is used as a drug to treat primary biliary cholangitis, and is undergoing development for several other liver diseases and related disorders.

It is used together with another medicine, Ursodeoxycholic acid (UDCA), in patients who do not respond sufficiently to UDCA alone, and on its own in patients who cannot take UDCA.

7-ketolithocholic acid

7-Ketolithocholic acid is a secondary bile acid , It is widely used in manufacturing of Ursodeoxycholic acid and Obeticholic acid as a key starting material .
